New Production of Julius Caesar

Aquila Theatre Company brings a new production of Julius Caesar to the Berkshires

October 19th & 20th at 8:00 PM on the Mainstage; ’62 Center

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – “Classically trained, modernly hip,” (New York Times) Aquila Theatre Company makes newly topical and relevant the central moral and political dilemma of this classic study of the use, abuse, and undermining of power. Aquila’s production asks the audience to consider the price of democracy and freedom and the consequences that can befall a society when it is asked to defend its core beliefs.

Aquila is a company of British and American artists dedicated to classical drama. Founded in London in 1991 by Peter Meineck, Aquila is now based in New York City. Aquila is the foremost producer of touring classical theatre in the United States, visiting 60-70 American cities per year. Aquila’s 2006/2007 Tour consisted of Shakespeare’s ROMEO AND JULIET and a new stage adaptation of Geoffrey Chaucer’s CANTERBURY TALES. Aquila’s 2007/2008 season will be Shakespeare’s JULIUS CAESAR and Joseph Heller’s stage adaptation of his novel CATCH-22.

The ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance continues its tradition of offering some the boldest and most vibrant work in the Berkshires. The third season offers more then 70 different events in its three award winning theaters.

Our multiple venues will come alive with professional and student productions of new and classic works of theatre, dance, and music. The inclusive and collaborative spirit that defines the arts at Williams runs through each production. The ‘62 Center’s mission of putting performance into the context of and in the service of scholarly inquiry manifests itself through the integrated programming, open to the public and Williams students alike (see website for latest information), that accompanies each CenterSeries production. These lectures and symposia, films, master classes taught by artists-in-residence, open rehearsals, and other special events connect what happens on the ‘62 Center’s stages to the Williams and surrounding Berkshire community in a unique way. Art at Williams does not exist at a remove from life on campus but as an integral part of it, inviting engagement, debate, and celebration.
