Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company
presents
Featuring an
exhilarating ensemble of contemporary
musicians
[WILLIAMSTOWN, MA, January 13, 2008] The
internationally-acclaimed Bill T. Jones/ Arnie Zane Dance Company comes to the
Williams College ’62 Center for the first time with the Berkshire premiere of
the company’s compelling new work Chapel/Chapter.
The performance will take place one night only on Saturday, February 9 at 8:00 pm on the Mainstage,
located at 1000 Main
Street, in Williamstown, MA.
Forever
pushing boundaries, Jones’s new piece forces us once again to look at dance in a
new way. Chapel/Chapter creates
an intimate experience between the audience and the Company as it retells three
stories -- two of them based on high-visibility news items and the third a
reminiscence/confession offered by a company member. The New York Times called the resulting
triptych “A riveting experience… the visceral impact of this piece is
inescapable.”
Chapel/Chapter's spirit
is underscored by live music performed by a dynamic ensemble of contemporary
musicians: voicestrumentalist Lipbone Redding, a singer/multi-instrumentalist
who has been variously described as a vocal trickster and experimental cowboy;
cellist Christopher Lancaster, who creates multi-layered, textural music through
the use of real-time samplers and effect processing; and soprano Alicia Hall
Moran, a classical singer whose influences range from opera to jazz and art
song.
Jones’s
mission for Chapel/Chapter was to
create a self-contained world with its own soundscape and language comprising
song, music and words (court transcripts, newspaper articles and jailhouse
interviews) in dialogue with a rigorous, joyful movement vocabulary. Proceeding
from the assumption that we always live in the court of public opinion,
transgression and judgment, the piece strives to invite the "real world" to
enter the intimacy of a freely imagined contemplative space. “Rarely has [Mr.
Jones] been better able to sublimate his wide-ranging political, social and
moral concerns into art. Rarely has the strength of that art made his vision
express itself more purely,” states John Rockwell of the New York
Times.
The
’62 Center for Theatre and Dance continues its tradition of offering some the
boldest and most vibrant work in the Berkshires. The third season offers more
then 70 different events in its three award-winning
theaters.
Our
multiple venues will come alive with professional and student productions of new
and classic works of theatre, dance, and music. The inclusive and collaborative
spirit that defines the arts at Williams runs through each production. The ‘62
Center’s mission of putting performance into the context of, and in the service
of, scholarly inquiry manifests itself through the integrated programming, open
to the public and Williams students alike (see website for latest information),
that accompanies each CenterSeries production. These lectures and symposia,
films, master classes taught by artists-in-residence, open rehearsals, and other
special events connect what happens on the ‘62 Center’s stages to the Williams
and surrounding Berkshire community in a unique way. Art at Williams does not
exist at a remove from life on campus, but as an integral part of it, inviting
engagement, debate, and celebration.
Chapel/Chapter will be performed
on Saturday, February 9 at 8:00 pm on the Williams ’62 Center Mainstage. Tickets
are $10/$3 with valid student ID.
