The Lady from the Sea

[WILLIAMSTOWN, MA, February 15, 2008] – One of Spain’s most elite flamenco companies will stomp and clap its way into the ’62 Center at Williams College with the seductive Lady from the Sea (La Mujer del Agua) featuring Bessie Award-winning Soledad Barrio in the title role. The performance will take place for one night only on Sunday, March 9 at 7:00 pm on the ’62 Center Mainstage, located at 1000 Main Street, in Williamstown, MA.

Inspired by the Henrik Ibsen play of the same name, The Lady from the Sea is a narrative–driven, theatrical representation of heroine Ellida Wangel’s internal struggle for truth, personal freedom, and ultimately, her chosen love. Told through the unique and captivating art form that is flamenco, the story emerges through the synthesis of dance, song, and music to create “A soul-stirring tour-de-force of theater.” (New York Times)

Joan Acocella of The New Yorker raves “Of the flamenco dancers I have seen, Soledad Barrio, the star of Noche Flamenco, is the most severe and internal.” Gia Kourlas, of the New York Times, adds “Her performances start with a quiet, silky grace, but by the end she is more creature than animal.”

Noche Flamenca was founded in Madrid in 1993 by Artistic Director Martin Santangelo, a former actor with Luis Valdez’s Teatro Campesino, and his wife, Soledad Barrio. Comprising dancers, singers, and guitar players, the company seeks to maintain the essence, purity, and integrity of one of the world’s most complicated and mysterious art forms, which traces its 600-year history in the unique interplay of Andalusian, Islamic, Sephardic, and Gypsy cultures.

Touring the world for over 11 years, the company received the Lucille Lortel Award for Special Theatrical Performance in 2003. Ms Soledad has received awards in more than a dozen countries around the globe for her excellence in dance. In the past few years alone, the company has debuted in Buenos Aires, Chile, Denver, Seattle, Santa Barbara, San Diego, Miami, Hawaii, and a six week tour of Australia and New Zealand.

The Lady from the Sea will be performed on Sunday, March 9 at 7 pm on the ’62 Center Mainstage at Williams College. Tickets are $3 with valid student ID & $10 for all others.

For tickets, visit the Williams ’62 Center Box Office Tues-Sat, 1-5 pm or call (413) 597-2425. For more information, please visit http://62center.williams.edu
