THE GOVERNMENT INSPECTOR
WilliamsTheatre presents Spring Production

April 27-28 & May 3-5, 2007
CenterStage

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College Theatre Department is proud to announce the production of “The Government Inspector,” written by Nikolai Gogol, translated by Christopher English, and directed by WilliamsTheatre professor Omar Sangare. The show will be performed April 27 and 28, and May 3, 4, and 5, at 7:30 pm in the CenterStage of The ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance at Williams College.

“The Government Inspector” was written by Nikolai Gogol, Russian writer and founder of critical realism in dramatic literature. This satiric masterpiece portrays a small town, paralyzed by news about the unexpected visit of an undercover inspector. The rumor terrifies officials and provokes their guilty consciences. Gogol's amusing yet profound story is a grotesque peek at human nature. The new translation by Christopher English brings out unique vitality, humor and the everlasting moral wisdom of Gogol's drama. This is the first production by Assistant Professor Omar Sangare, who joined the Department of Theatre in Fall 2006

The play will be performed in the CenterStage, the award-winning black box-style theatre in the ’62 Center. Assistant Professor of Theatre Andrew Lieberman provides the scenic design for the production, transforming the CenterStage into a Hollywood set fit for the arrival of the mysterious inspector. Lighting designer Peter West, Costume designer Deb Brothers, and Choreographer Sandra Burton round out the production team.

“The Government Inspector” will run April 27 –28, and May 3 – 5, at 7:30 pm in the CenterStage of the ’62 Center for Theatre and Dance. Tickets are $3 each. To make a reservation, please contact the Box Office at (413) 597 2425. The box office is open Tuesday through Friday, 1pm-4pm, and 1 hour before each performance. The Box Office accepts cash and check only.
