“Sarah Bernhardt’s Handkerchief”
Written and Performed by Carol Ockman

Sep 15, 16|CenterStage|7:30 PM

Sarah Bernhardt’s Handkerchief, a drama in one act written and performed by Carol Ockman, Professor of Art History, ricochets from the thrill of appearing live on stage with Cherry Jones and Debra Winger to the hell of returning to her father’s suicide 20 years after the fact.

“The decision first to write about trauma in my book-length memoir of the same title, and then to perform what I wrote reflects my commitment to testimony and further communication across traumas—personal, collective, and intergenerational,” Ockman writes.

Sarah Bernhardt’s Handkerchief was first performed in April 2016 at Pomona College in Claremont, CA, with the help of Theatre Professors Thomas Leabhart and James Taylor. Here, under the direction of Professors of Theatre David Eppel and Kameron Steele, a dramatically different performance emerges from the same text.

The one-hour performance is followed by a talkback with Professor Ockman.
