Dance Department presentsKusika & ZambeziArtistic Direction, Sandra L. Burton and Tendai Muparutsa
Kusika and the Zambezi Marimba Band were founded to provide a place for students, faculty, and the community of artists interested in the study and performance of ideas and material from Africa and the Diaspora to grow collectively. We are inspired by the deep traditions and innovation that is a hallmark of Africa’s global impact in the areas of music, dance, literature, fashion, and spiritual practice. The challenges people continue to face on the continent and the diaspora often inform the themes reflected in new work created for our spring performances. Throughout the year Kusika and Zambezi perform on and off campus featuring a repertoire of dance, music, and story telling that currently includes the countries of Ghana, Guinea, Mali, Senegal, Zimbabwe, and Haiti. Legendary masters Obo Addy, Kweyao Agyapon, Alport Mhlanga, and co–founders Gary Sojkowski and Ernest Brown have mentored us. Recent guest artists include Bashir Shakur, Robert Michelin, Mickie Davidson, Yalani Bangoura, Sulley Imoro, Danys “La Mora” Perez, Franciso Mora Catlett, and Nia Love. Our community welcomes you to join us!
